SUMMARY:Theorem Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their second Theorem Painting Workshop featuring Peggy Allen from Heritage Art and Craft Studio. Experience the art of Theorem Painting\, a distinctive and rarely taught Early American art form created exclusively through stenciling\, allowing anyone to create a masterpiece regardless of skill level or prior experience. \nInstructor Peggy Allen will guide participants in a step-by-step process of creating their own 8″x10″ Theorem painting of Fruit Compote in a Glass Bowl. Using layered stencils\, brushes\, and oil paints on fabric suitable for framing\, participants will produce a realistic portrait that appears hand-painted but is achieved through a step-by-step application of layered stenciling. No experience is required\, and practice will be provided before doing the actual Theorem. In addition to creating your own Theorem\, your presenter will discuss its rich history\, composition\, and creative process. On display will be a private collection of Theorem paintings from local and regional artists. \nThe use of fruit in portraits served as a symbolic element in Colonial America. During this period\, fruits conveyed various meanings: exotic fruits\, such as the pineapple\, symbolized immense wealth\, high status\, and gracious hospitality (and were frequently rented for display purposes). In contrast\, common orchard fruits like apples and pears represented wholesome domesticity\, resilience\, and self-sufficiency for the working class. \nPeggy Allen\, a native of Berks County and co-owner of Heritage Art and Craft Studio\, a Mobile Art Studio\, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. While she offers a wide range of classes\, her true passion lies in Traditional American crafts. Peggy teaches Historic Theorem Painting across multiple venues and Historic locations in Berks\, Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD). \nRegistration is required for the workshop and a form can be obtained by emailing us at thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com. DESCRIPTION:Come and experience colonial life with interactive learning and exploration! Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of hands-on activities and demonstrations for children and their families. Children will have the opportunity to learn about Daniel Boone’s exciting childhood in the Oley Valley and participate in various eighteenth century\, hands-on activities such as textile processing\, candle dipping\, quill pen writing\, butter making\, tinsmithing\, and more! And\, in celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, young visitors can pick up ‘Washington’s Orders’ to guide them through Revolutionary War activities\, ending with a visit with General Washington. \nChildren will learn about Daniel’s mother Sarah Boone and her famous butter and cheese as they explore the spring cellar and smokehouse. Volunteers will talk about food preservation and children will have a chance to help make butter. Throughout the afternoon\, volunteers will teach children how to write with a quill pen and dip candles as they learn about handwriting\, schooling\, and lighting in the eighteenth century. Of course\, a youngster’s time wasn’t all work – children will have a chance to play colonial games and enjoy old-fashioned toys. Young visitors and their families can enjoy tours through the Boone House and the Bertolet Log House during the afternoon as well. And don’t miss a chance to learn about Daniel’s father\, Squire Boone\, and his job as a colonial weaver. Stop by the Homestead barn to learn about textile processing. \nWe are excited to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a new fun activity for children and their families. With their ‘Orders’ in hand\, children can make their way to join the local militia where they will learn and practice muster drills with wooden dummy guns. Then visit the local gunsmith and learn about the Continental Army and the long rifle. Finally\, children can try sitting in a soldier’s saddle as they practice their swordsmanship skills. Once your ‘Orders’ are complete\, visit General Washington’s Headquarters inside the Boone House and receive a special letter marking your achievement. \nAdmission: Adults $10.00\, Seniors (65+) $8.00\, Youth (6-17) $5.00. Children 5 and under and DBHA members are free. Please no pets (except service animals) and no smoking. The event is funded and presented by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.

SUMMARY:Quilting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to try quilting? Well now’s your chance! Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for a quilt making workshop led by The Hopewell Quilters. Quilts were important in keeping us warm during the winter months. Did you know that colonial quilts were made from one piece of fabric for the top and one for the bottom with batting in the middle? These types of quilts are known as whole cloth quilts. As the years went on the designs became more elaborate on quilts. In the late 1700s and early 1800s girls were supposed to have 13 quilts completed before they were married. Quilting bees were a way for the community to come together and help make quilts. \nDuring the workshop on April 26th\, participants will make a potholder. The cost for the workshop is $20 for Daniel Boone Homestead Associate members and $25 for non-members. Fabric and supplies will be provided. The workshop is open to participants aged 16-adult and all skill levels are welcome. Space is limited to 15 participants.
