SUMMARY:Early American Candle Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their first annual Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop with Heritage Art and Craft Studio. Journey back in time with Greg and Peggy Geesaman to learn the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will take part in the careful and significant process of candle dipping\, a traditional Early American method\, as they create your own double wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle. In addition\, participants will make a 5″ cinnamon scented display ornament\, by a method similarly used by German Lebkuchen Bakers in the sixteenth century from a Stoneware Cookie mold (designs vary). A Historic Presentation from Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle making in the eighteenth century. \nHeritage Art and Craft Studio is co-owned by Greg Geesaman and Peggy Allen-Geesaman. For over fifty years\, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History\, as well as gardening\, landscaping\, agriculture\, and environmental preservation. He shares his knowledge with others through educational seminars\, classes\, and workshops. Peggy\, a native of Berks County\, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. Before launching her own business in the 1990s\, she worked in retail marketing. While she offers a wide range of classes\, her true passion lies in Traditional American crafts. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD). \nThis is a beginner-level workshop and is open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. Registration is required for the workshop\, and a form can be obtained by emailing us at thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com. Daniel Boone Homestead Associate Members $45 and Non-Members $50. SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series - The American Revolution in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their annual fall lecture series at the Daniel Boone Homestead. Historians and scholars will share their knowledge on various topics with the local community and its visitors. This year’s lectures will focus on the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn more about life in the past. \nIs it possible to sit out a violent revolution? What happens when neutrality isn’t an option? Join us on September 13 as historian Aaron Sullivan explores these questions in the context of the American Revolution in Pennsylvania\, looking closely at the British military occupation of Philadelphia and the often tragic plight of the many Americans who struggled to survive the war without picking one side or the other. \nAaron Sullivan is an author and historian living near Philadelphia. He teaches history at Rider University in Lawrenceville\, NJ\, and his book The Disaffected (Penn Press\, 2019)\, received the Book of the Year Award from the American Revolutionary Roundtable of Philadelphia. Sullivan received his Doctorate in History from Temple University in Philadelphia in 2014 and his Bachelor’s in Computer Science from LeTourneau University in 2004. \nAdmission for the lectures is a $2/person suggested donation. SUMMARY:Bat Program
DESCRIPTION:Did you know the Homestead is home to numerous bats? Join us for an evening program to learn more about the bats that live at the Daniel Boone Homestead. Led by Dr. Karen Campbell\, retired Albright College professor\, this program will consist of a presentation inside the Wayside Lodge followed by a walk to search for bats as dusk falls. Bat boxes are located throughout the Homestead property\, and bats can often be spotted nesting and flying around the site. Bats are the only mammals able to fly and are more agile while flying than most birds. Dr. Campbell earned her PhD from Indiana University in Vertebrate Physiology and Zoology. She has done extensive bat research at eastern Pennsylvania parks and historic sites including Valley Forge\, Hopewell Furnace\, and the Berks County Heritage Center. \nNo admission is charged for this program. It will take place in the Wayside Lodge. Please no pets (except service animals) and no smoking.  The event is funded and presented by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.

SUMMARY:A Colonial 250th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates are thrilled to announce their signature 2026 event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Join us for an immersive\, living history event featuring colonial and early American demonstrations\, trades\, and activities. Meet General George Washington and learn about life on and off the battlefield while you visit a military encampment and engage with reenactors. Enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride through the historic area. Listen to the Brandywine Colonials Fife and Drum Corps during the afternoon and then join us for a reading of the Declaration of Independence and live music on the lawn with the Haycreek Valley Goldband to close out the evening as we celebrate America’s 250th. \nAs visitors make their way through the Historic Area\, they can enjoy a tour through the Boone House and an open-hearth cooking demonstration. Throughout the historic area\, visitors can learn about the intricate work of a leatherworker\, the detailed work of a gunsmith\, and the skillful work of a blacksmith and how these important artisans contributed to the war efforts. Plus\, visit the American Indian display to learn about the role these indigenous people played in America’s fight for independence. At the Bertolet Log House\, visitors will hear from living history interpreters about the colonial militia and Dragoons and can participate in a muster activity using wooden dummy guns and swords. Then\, make your way to the Revolutionary War medical hospital and surgeon display in the Wayside Lodge. Here visitors can view period medical instruments and learn about medical practices during the War. \nIn addition to demonstrations and trades\, there will be a variety of eighteenth-century hands-on activities for children and adults to enjoy including quill pen writing and colonial toys and games. And\, as part of this event\, we are thrilled to exbibit one of Warwick Furnace’s American Revolution cannons courtesy of the Thomas P. Bentley Nature Preserve and French and Pickering Creeks Conversation Trust. In 2022\, this 4\,500-pound cannon\, along with three others\, was discovered under 30 inches of earth at Warwick Furnace where it had remained for 246 years. \nDon’t miss our fun line-up of delicious food and beverage vendors\, as well as unique merchant vendors. \nFood & Beverage Vendors: Blazing Swine BBQ – Pip & Lily’s Loaded Tots – The Peppermint Stick Candy Store – Wow Wagon – Ridgewood Winery – Sly Fox Brewing Company – The Social Stable \nMerchant Vendors: Liberty & Co. – Philip Marc Sons of Liberty \nThis event will also feature a lecture tent with brief\, informative talks throughout the afternoon.
